Cheyenne, Put ‘Five Guys’ in Your Mouth

21 Sep

Fiver Guys

Five Guys, One Story

Five Guys Burgers and Fries opened their doors in 1986, in Arlington, VA.  The owner, Jerry Murrel, have the four Murrel the option of either going back to school or starting a business.  Since they opened, Five Guys has spread to over 1000 locations in over 47 states.  And this summer, Five Guys bestowed their gift of manly sized hamburgers and heaps of fries to Cheyenne, WY.

Enough Food for Five?

Feel like you could eat a horse?  Don’t worry, Five Guys has a Bacon Cheeseburger for that.  As you wait in queue, you can start off eating all the roasted peanuts you want.  Those who have a manly appetite can get just one patty on their burger (Little Bacon Cheeseburger).  And those with Epic Meal Time appetites can get two patties (Bacon Cheeseburger).  Each one is smothered in your choice of toppings, draped in silky American Cheese, and loaded with the crispy bacon that would satisfy even the snobbiest of bacon enthusiasts.  Not enough?  Order some fries!  Even the small fry comes with a mountain of extra fries piled ontop.

Want to Join The Crowd?

Come experience Five Guys, located at the Frontier Mall on Dell Range Boulevard, everyday from 11am-10pm.

Lessons in Ambiguity

21 Oct

It’s easy to learn a lesson if worth learning. Due to the mysterious nature of the advertisements for the showcase I was completely unaware of what I was walking into. The words “mixed chamber music” must have slipped right past me because that’s exactly what I saw.

Lamenting….

I don’t often have a sense of remorse for the void that is my knowledge of classical music, but today I felt something similar. One of my favorite musicians, Conor Oberst, wrote in a song called Going for the Gold, “I know a girl who cries when she practices violin. Cause each note sounds so pure, it just cuts into her, And then the melody comes pouring out her eyes.” I find this line interesting not because I cried during the performances, but because of his focus on purity. The one thing that can be said about the chamber performance was that purity was a common undertone.

I was unable to find a bill and as limited without the use of my cell phone. I wanted to be able to capture one of the key moments, in my opinion, that defined the afternoon. With striking staccato notes flowing from the piano, riddled with soft harmony on the flute, and a soft and mellow barrage from the brass section. The emotions I was feelings closely mimicked my feelings during a transcendental solo by Jasco.

It’s amazing to be able to go to an event you have no knowledge on and come away feeling fulfilled. Classical music may not be my thing, but when musicians are able to communicate so effectively through their instruments it’s a definite thing of beauty.

Since I was unable to share audio from the show I thought I’d still share a classical song.

Looking for something different?

This Sunday October 21, 2012 at 3 pm there is a Faculty Showcase at the University of Wyoming.

Often there are instruments that I have completely forgotten about. Which is a complete and utter shame when you consider the wonderful effects of tonality. Instruments like the bassoon, clarinet, and flute can melt your soul if you give them the chance.

So naturally I was excited when I found this event. The showcase is being billed as an experience to listen to mixed chamber music performed by various and distinguished faculty members. If you come to this show you will be able to see performances by:

Theresa Bogard & Chi-Chen Wu – Piano

Lights Along the Shore – Moldovan Nai(much like a pan flute),  Clarinets, and Piano

Nicole Riner – Flute (not much like a pan flute)

Maureen Boddicker – Vocal

Mark Soueidi – Trombone

Kaori Uno – Bassoon

With such a diverse lineup it should make for a very exciting afternoon of music!

It’s in the Fine Arts Concert Hall located on the University of Wyoming campus. This is also a free event! Nothing better than a lazy Sunday afternoon being serenaded by profession musicians!

Questions about the event?

If you have any questions feel free to ask me or contact Dr. Nicole Riner, who is in charge of this event. She can be reached at 766-5242 or nriner@uwyo.edu

Robbery at Gryphon Theatre!

23 Sep

Whoever made it to the show at the gryphon last night made out like a bandit! 5 dollars was a steal for that level of entertainment. The crowd was relatively small but the energy and the atmosphere was electric.

How things started:

Meadow and the Larks is a 5 piece band from Laramie. They consist of a guitarist, drummer, trombone player, sax player, and a vocalist. The harmony between the two vocalists is a markee feature of the group. The two vocalists sound like a mix between Regina Spektor and Sherri DuPree-Bemis (the lead singer of Eisley). They blended a nice range of covers, from Bright Eyes, to Neutral Milk Hotel, and even Kid Cudi. The harmony was backed by a folky guitar and a subtle horn section. They played a diverse and entertaining set!

Meadow and the Larks

Then things got louder!

Shotgun Shogun was also a band from Laramie that was just a subtle lineup change away from Meadow and the Larks. The drummer for Meadow and the Larks also turned out to be a charismatic frontman. His raw guitar style drove the sound of the band. Soloing and playing the harmonica at the same time is an incredible feat and he killed it! The vocal/guitarist of Meadow and the Larks also joined on rhythm guitar. With athletic drumming and thumping bass lines the band was able to blend reggae, folk, and pure rock into a powerful machine. Their set of original songs were a nice blend of the raw and refined sides of rock.

Shotgun Shogun

Then finally….

As expected three beautiful ladies of Blue Bird stepped onto the stage and meekly went out the business. The six piece band sounded polished and were able to recreate the same mood as their recordings. The only thing better than two-piece harmony is three-piece harmony! The harmony was backed by wonderful guitar work and aesthetic sounds from synth work and piano work.  It was I managed to steal the set list (okay, so I asked politely, but whatever):
LIC
Holes
I still Believe
Cars cover (what they actually wrote)
Metamorphosis
Perfect Day
Give Me Light
Apple of My Eye
Waiting for the Fall
The War
You Got It.
The crowd was able to coax them into an extra song called “Don’t Leave Me”.

Blue Bird

The best part was the set list was written in colored pencil, on a napkin. These were amazing musicians and people. The show was absolutely worth it. The show was in an intimate setting filled with personal music. To those who made it, thanks for coming! To those who missed it, maybe you’ll think twice about going the Gryphon next time!
