Wolfgang Gartner Shows Boulder A “Weekend In America”

21 Oct

On October 15, not even a month since Wolfgang Gartner had been in Colorado, he was back, and this time he was coming to the Boulder Theater. I had been really disappointed I hadn’t got to see him at Beta in Denver last month, so this trip was definitely a redemption trip for failing to catch this world class producer the first time through, and after having listened to Weekend In America about a billion times since Wolfgang Gartner released it, I was in dire need of hearing his material live.

The venue itself was a sick location and was my first time at a show in Colorado, that wasn’t at Red Rocks or in one of Denver’s venues. We got to the theater at pretty much 8:30 sharp, which was perfect because the doors had just opened and there was no line to be seen. There was no way in hell I was enjoying the concert from anywhere other than front and center, right up against the stage, and that’s exactly where my friends and I ended up.

The openers for the night were J Flash and James Egbert, both of whom were Colorado natives, and more importantly dope producers. J Flash was up first, as he was a newer and less known name, but still packed heat as a producer and he really got the crowd going EARLY in the night. He dropped recent and recognizable bangers such as Zedd’s “Shave It” and “Maximal Crazy,” which everyone obviously enjoyed. J Flash didn’t play like he was opening, he brought a ton of energy and really impressed me.

Next up was James Egbert. James Egbert has been getting bigger and bigger, he played an early set at Global Dance Festival this last summer, which I unfortunately missed, but I hadn’t stopped listening to this guy’s music and was stoked to have such a great up and coming electro producer to open right before the master himself took center stage. James Egbert’s Blackhawk EP was one of my favorite surprise downloads right at the end of summer and his infusion of so many different styles of electro, with some beautiful, trance-esque intros is definitely taking this kid places. James Egbert’s set was a stunner, mixing it huge electro songs, with his tracks from Blackhawk, “Isle of Capri,” “Lady Luck,” “The Lodge” and of course “Blackhawk.” Look for his name to start recurring in more and more events ladies and gents.

While the crowd was still in a complete frenzy from James Egbert’s set, Wolfgang Gartner took the center decks, took control of the crowd, and never let up. Let me start by saying that Wolfgang’s style of electro may be, arguably, the most fun style to absolutely dance your face off to. There’s just something about the mish-mash of sounds he uses and how they come together, that induces extreme ear pleasure, equating to an unstoppable urge to move until you can’t stand, and then somehow keep on going.  Wolfgang took the crowd through a slew of tracks, classics such as “Illmerica,’ “Wolfgang’s 5th Symphony” and “Space Junk” were obvious crowd pleasers: (on another note, I, being the genius I am, forgot my precious Flip Camera and unfortunately couldn’t take any videos, but my buddy Dan took a couple great videos)

My favorite track of the night, aside from the encore (I’ll get to that in a minute) was “Menage a Trois.” This was the second time I’ve heard it live, and this song is never going to get old. Definitely a highlight and I’m actually glad for my buddy taking this awesome video, as it gave me time to rage it up and , as you can see, the sold-out, amazing crowd was digging it just as much:

After a solid two hours of going hard, Wolfgang’s set was wrapping up, but as the crowd begged for one more song, he delivered the goods. Dropping, “Animal Rights,” was single handedly the greatest and worst decision he could’ve made. As in, great for everyone but security, and worst for security. People literally started acting like well…animals, as the realization that this was our last hurrah for the night. People were getting on the stage, dancing, shuffling, taking videos, and dodging security as “Animal Rights” thundered. Wolfgang himself was obviously highly amused, as the grin he wore during that song and the reaction of the crowd was absolutely priceless.

All in all, Wolfgang Gartner gave the Boulder Theater and it’s sold out crowd, a night that won’t soon be forgotten. Not to mention the rising stars of J Flash and James Egbert showed enormous promise.
