Oktavec earns star of the week after 3 wins

Number 8 Branko Oktavec, a 225lb forward from Bratislava of the Cheyenne Stampede was awarded star of the week. This is awarded to three players from the WSHL’s by the Hockey Wolf Online Pro-Shop. This Weekend against the Southern Oregon Spartans Branko played a huge role in the nail biting wins. He ended the weekend with five goals. After three close games the Stampede are 10-8-1, this places them third in the Mountain Division.

Stampede puts out the fire in game one

Game one of a tight series played over the weekend. The Cheyenne Stampede played the Southern Oregon Spartans to win three by one goal. The Spartans came out hot in the opening game on Friday. The Spartans came out with a 2-0 lead in the first period. The Stampede was down 2-0 early in the second period. The Stampede turned on the water hose, and put the Spartans out. They scored three straight goals to come from behind and win 3-2. Brank Oktavec turned the game around with a goal that put the team up one at a minute fifteen in the second period. Back to a tie after Thayne Trumbull scored during the power play. Jacob Eisenstat on defense shoots for the win.

The Spartans again came out with a 2-0 lead. They let up too soon as the Stampede came from behind. Saldeen got the scoring started for Southern Oregon with fifty seven seconds into the game. Then along came Tyler Spencer adding a goal in the second period to make it two to zero. Ian Teal scored at the five minute mark to pull Cheyenne ahead by one. Just three minutes later, Carl Edstrom got the lead back to two for the Spartans. Back and forth, till a lead for the Spartans holds into the third period. The Stampede grabbed the crowd midway through the third period, with goals by Jacob Eisenstat and Ian Teal only thirty two seconds apart. With a minute twenty seven left Branko Oktavec took the game winning shot, to avoid overtime play.

Third times a charm

Let the nail biters continue. All three games the two teams went back and forth all night. This game started out defensive heavy with a scoreless first period. The power play goal by Arturs Buss’ gave the Spartans an early lead. In three straight games the Stampede came back with a power play goal. Tyler Spencer’s shot at eight minutes gave the Spartans a short lead. Here comes Branko Oktavec again, with a power play goal to tie the game. The Spartans score on another power play to take a lead in the third. The Stampede made a third comeback to tie things up. Two overtime periods and still no win. A shootout will determine the winner. The teams again went back and forth in the shootout, Ian Teal took the winning shot in the fifth round. The Stampede completed the sweep with a victory in the shootout.

The Stampede play the Boulder Bison this Friday Dec 6, puck drops at 7:30. McGee Hern and Piaz will be the sponsors of the game, so come check out the fun giveaways.
