The places they’ll go

Meet a need

At risk youth in America is a seemingly permanent fixture of our culture. According to data provided by the U.S. Census Bureau posted on ChildStats.gov, only sixty-four percent of children ages 0-17 in America in 2012 lived with two married parents and twenty-four percent of children lived only with their mothers and four percent lived only with their fathers while four percent lived with neither of their parents.

Have fun

According to Ruta Marcinkus’s post on the Mindapples blog (and many, many others), pursuing enjoyable activities (i.e. having FUN) is good for us. Good for us mentally, physically and socially. While we may intuit this some of us need to know it’s got research to back it. This may one of the secrets to the success seen through Big Brothers Big Sisters, they understand the value of fun in a child’s life.

When you are matched with a little the opportunities to have fun are endless, the two of you could:

  • Take a walk
  • Go bowling
  • Play at the park
  • Go to a movie
  • Take a hike
  • Go ice skating
  • Play in the snow
