I’ve blogged about the baseball and football opportunities in Cheyenne. Now it is time to learn about my favorite, Basketball. Basketball is a great sport for youngsters to learn. It helps teach kids important life skills. The sport helps children stay fit, learn teamwork, follow direction, gain confidence, use assertiveness and commitment. Basketball can be played by both boys and girls. Basketball is fun and challenging.

Cheyenne Parks and Rec offers a league that focuses on fundamental development. This league is a non-competitive league that allows players to develop their abilities with lots of practices and playing time. The registration fees are $50.

Cheyenne YMCA offers a rec league that also provides the development of fundamentals along with teaching kids the values of team sports. They will learn fair play, team work, sportsmanship and how to have fun.  Registration is Oct 6. 9-10 year olds are $40 if you are a member and $55 for non-members. 11-12 year olds are $45 for members and $60 for non-members. It is a 7 week program with games played on Friday nights and Saturday mornings.

3 points and a smile

What better way to test your teams’ skills than to register for a tournament. The Holly Frontier basketball tournament takes place right here in Cheyenne March 15 and 16. This tournament pulls teams from Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, South Dakota, Utah and Montana. It is open to boys in grades 4-8 and girls in grades 5-8. The cost is $150 for a 3 game guarantee.
