Service Learning Opportunity around town – CASA

8 Oct

CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates – For Children.

What it is all about

CASA trains community volunteers to advocate, be “the voice,” of neglected and abused children in the court system. Volunteers go through a training program in order to become an advocate and have to fulfill certain requirements before even applying.

Meet requirements, volunteer

You have to be at least 21 years of age, have your own vehicle and be able to keep information confidential. Volunteers have to commit for a minimum of 18 months, this could take care of multiple service learning requirements for different classes if they let you use this more than once. There are a lot more requirements, so please go to their website for more information.

Who should volunteer

I think this would be a great opportunity for anyone who is going into law fields to see what all goes into a case. People with an interest in social work could also use this as a learning opportunity.

Most of all, if you volunteer you need to have the right mindset. These are kids that have seen the worst one person could imagine and in a way have been through hell. They don’t need you to analyze them, they need someone who truly tried to understand what they have been through and can speak for them in a way they are unable to do. This is not an easy task to do and not everyone is cut out for it. But if you are that one person, who can, then help these kids and help CASA because they need volunteers.
