Service Learning Opportunities around town – Hemi Lighted Forest of Hope

Project hits close to home

The first service learning opportunity I want to get your attention to is the Hemi Lighted Forest of Hope.

If you have been at the college for a while, you might have had a chance to read my column, “You define yourself, not your disease.” Yes, this project is close to my heart because in many ways I am one of these kids. I got lucky in a way, because I have been seizure free for over 20 years. But it can come back at any point, having this in the back of my mind, and as a mother now, it scares me more than ever.

Get out there, help

The time is getting close for Papa Kelley to put up the lights again, get out the extension courts and get the Hemi Forest ready. I know for a fact, he will appreciate anyone that is willing to come by and help. Over 600 trees need to have lights and the corresponding extension cords.

Even if you just come by for an hour, anything will help. Soon the lights will go up and around March everything will come back down. So there are plenty of opportunities to get some service learning time in.

Visit once, return for more

Do what the students from Human Services did in the spring and spent some time with the Kelley’s in the forest, learn what it is all about and later come back to bring your friends.

Donations are always welcome at the Hemi Forest, after all it supports the Hemispherectomy Foundation and kids around the world.
