Musical gives opportunity to youth in theater

Dave Gaer, LCCC theater instructor and director of “Seussical Jr.,” said the play was chosen because not many shows are available for children, and this production allows young people to have a chance to be part of theater.

“We like to provide opportunities for youth,” Gaer said.

In addition, this play allows the elementary and high schools in Cheyenne to be involved.

“Elementary and junior high schools tie it into their curriculum,” Gaer said, “and then the students get to see the show.”

A wide range of ages participates in the production of “Seussical Jr.” Gaer said cast members are as young as 7 all the way up to people in their late 20s.

Once again, Horton finds himself in hot water

In the musical, Horton the elephant (played by Liam Guille) must protect Jojo (played by Jaryd McMartin) and all of his Who friends from danger and non-believers while guarding an egg left to him by Mayzie La Bird (played by Katie Delacath).

Horton faces danger, ridicule, kidnapping and trial, but is triumphant thanks to the powers of friendship, family, community and loyalty as well as the support of Gertrude McFuzz (played by Hannah Heying).

“Seussical Jr.” was written by Lynn Andrews, who also wrote the lyrics, and Stephen Flaherty, who composed the musical score. The play was co-conceived by Andrews, Flaherty and Eric Idle.

“It is appropriate for everyone,” Gaer said. The show appeals to all audiences, young and old alike.

“Adults will enjoy it because they are the stories they grew up with,” Gaer said, “but children will especially enjoy it.”
