Where to find great deals shopping online

29 Sep

Even Wyoming isn’t safe from today’s economy.  That’s why sites like Slickdeals and Fatwallet have become so popular.  Getting more bang for your buck is more of a priority now than ever when shopping, and unfortunately we don’t have a Fry’s or other good deal stores like it here in wyoming, so online is the place to look when bargain shopping.

Slickdeals.net and Fatwallet.com are pretty much the standard when it comes to great deal sites.  Both are community driven.  Both have feature packed, friendly user interfaces.

What happens is, users who happen across great deals while shopping online, they will go to one of these deal sites and share their good fortune.  For example, let’s say someone is shopping on Dell.com for a new laptop, and they find that not only is a laptop 40% off, but a coupon code for $200 off stacks on top of that. So they’ll pull up their preferred deal website, and post what they’ve found on the user forums.  If enough people think this is a good deal, it can get voted up, and eventually pushed to the front page of the deal site.  So, in general, the front pages of slickdeals and fatwallet only display the best deals. It’s all community driven.

You may notice that a lot of these deals have strange things in their headers like “B&M”, or “YMMV”.  Here’s a key to help you get started.

  • B&M – Brick and mortar store (A physical retail store as opposed to an online merchant)
  • FAR – Free After Rebate
  • YMMV – Your mileage may vary (Meaning, the deal may not be the same for everyone)
  • PM – Price match
  • OOS – Out of stock
  • GC – Gift certificate

Here’s a few great deals that students might appreciate:

Dell Signature 16″ Laptop Backpack for $14

Gears of War 3 (pre-order) + $20 Gift Card for $60

Toshiba Protege Touchscreen Laptop for $299

  • 1.83GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5600 processor
  • 1GB DDR2 memory (4GB max)
  • 12.1″ 1024 x 768 touchscreen LCD display
  • 356MB Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950
  • 100GB 5400RPM hard drive
  • 6-cell Lithium-ion battery
  • Windows Vista Business
