Holiday opera

4 Nov

The Amahl Night Visitors, a holiday opera, will be coming to the LCCC playhouse December 4, 5, 6, 12, 18, 19, and 20. The opera will start at 7:30 p.m. on the 4, 5, 12, 18, and 19, and at 2 p.m. on the 6 and 20. Seats will cost $5.

The holiday opera was first performed at LCCC last year, with a lot of success. The performance is a joint effort of music and theater majors at LCCC and is directed by music instructor Nancy Cornish, who hopes to make the opera a holiday tradition at LCCC.

Here you can check out my interview with Terence Elison, an LCCC student and a performer in the opera.

The opera was originally written by composer Gian Carlo Menotti and debuted on national television on Christmas eve in 1951. The opera continued to air every Christmas Eve for many following years as  tradition.

The story is of the generosity of a poor young boy and his mother who ended up housing three kings that were on their way to see the Christ child that had just been born.
